GROTESQUERIES is a solo endeavor of prolific drummer Yianni Tranxidis, whose credits include Black Mass, Rozamov, and Garroted among others. The idea for GROTESQUERIES spawned sometime in 2020, as Tranxidis drew together influences from Gorguts, Carcass, Dismember, and Morbid Angel and endeavored to create a band with intense lyrical themes – and the music to back it up.
“As a lover of true crime, horror movies, and extreme music,” he explains, “I felt like I had the perfect ingredients to fuel my imagination to create a death metal band I always wanted to create, with the creative vision entirely under my control. I love deep lyrical themes that excite me, that when reading, can make you easily envision the terror I aim to portray upon the listener.”
Indeed, GROTESQUERIES’ debut EP, Haunted Mausoleum, takes all those ingredients and creates a gutted-yet-engaging experience firmly within the classic death metal pantheon. Tranxidis’ skill as a drummer is immediately felt, as the EP’s three component songs charge forward with sadistic intent but effortlessly manage to twist and turn rather than relying on verse/chorus/breakdown structures. But, best of all, GROTESQUERIES is an actual band, as Tranxidis is joined by his friends Brendan O’hare (Black Mass, Casket Rats), John Rainis (GOG, Wodar), and Mike Buonomo (Morgued), and that live-in-the-garage physicality is fully felt across these 15 minutes of terror; Connor Thompson (Stagnater) will be joining the lineup, sharing the lead/rhythm guitar duties, and will be involved on future recordings. And by “felt,” we really mean FELT: recorded at New Alliance Studios with engineer Alec Rodriguez at the helm, Haunted Mausoleum features some of the clearest-yet-CRUSHING production on a death metal record in recent memory.
