Description
Ontario, Canada’s Wreck-Defy is on a mission to build the ultimate thrash metal machine! Featuring guitarist Matt Hanchuck, ex-Annihilator singer Aaron Randall and ex-Testament bass player Greg Christian, Wreck-Defy is a force to be reckoned with!
The creative powerhouse Matt Hanchuck is the driving force behind the Canadian thrash metal machine Wreck-Defy. The band, led by the prolific guitarist, released “Powers That Be,” one of THE thrash metal albums of the past year, in November 2020. In the meantime, Matt also recorded a 4-track EP of cover versions of Canadian artists, featuring Henning Basse (ex-Metalium, ex-Firewind), Stu Block (ex-Iced Earth), Geoff Thorpe (Vicious Rumors), and several other prominent figures from the metal scene. Now, with “The World Enslaved,” the next onslaught is knocking at your door. But Wreck-Defy aren’t knocking tentatively; with these ten new riff monsters, they’re going to rip your damn front door right off its hinges!
Alongside mastermind Matt Hanchuck and former Testament bassist Greg Christian, two new musicians have joined the lineup. Studio drummer David Allen now provides the necessary drive on the drums. The departure of former Annihilator vocalist Aaron Randall has been more than adequately filled by Greg “Wags” Wagner (ex-Archetype, ex-Shatter Messiah). With him on vocals, Wreck-Defy’s sound is even more versatile, and the connection to power metal is further strengthened.
Regarding the creation of “The World Enslaved,” Matt says: “The songs for ‘The World Enslaved’ came together very quickly. I still had a lot of riffs left over from the last album, ‘Powers That Be,’ and honestly, when the world was at a standstill for the longest time and I couldn’t play, I just dove into songwriting and was knee-deep in the process of developing Wreck-Defy’s fourth album. The lyrics for the new album are largely steeped in reality. There are some fantasy elements as well, but given the state of the world, the government corruption, the tyranny, the lies, the untruths, and the greed, there was no shortage of topics for me to write about. The songs were written, arranged, and recorded over a period of about three months.”
The recordings for “The World Enslaved” took place in various locations. The guitar tracks were recorded in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, and Thunder Bay, ON. The drum tracks were recorded at Trident Studios in Pacheco, California, as were the bass tracks by Greg Christian. Greg “Wags” Wagner’s vocals were recorded in Ohio, USA. Guest musician Justin Steer contributed some of the bass tracks, which were recorded in Winnipeg, MB. “The World Enslaved” was mixed and mastered at Trident Studios in Pacheco, California.
The fantastic artwork was once again designed by Ari Arianthi of Hand Rot Art, who already did a great job for “Powers That Be”.
